Learning to protect the innocent with real world martial arts
Baguazhang is one of the three major internal martial arts brought to us from China. The other two are: Taichichuan (Tai Chi) which is the most famous of the three. It is known more for its health benefits than its martial techniques. The other is Xingyichuan known for its lineal and aggressive martial movements. Nine Dragon Baguazhang is the Li family style of Baguazhang. It was introduced to the Li family by the famous Taoist and herbalist Li Qingyun who, according to the New York Times was over 250 years old when he died in 1933. This method of Baguazhang has been passed down within the family business of Bao biao (body guards) right up to its present day inheritor, Dr John Painter. Baguazhang is characterized by powerful palm strikes, elusive tactics and constant movement. Nine Dragon Baguazhang Is taught in a very systematized manner. It begins with the Rolling the Pearl program that starts with basic quiet sitting,it moves on to standing then introduces shifting which leads into lineal walking and then into the well known practice of circle walking and finally with partner games. After the year or two it takes to progress through this program the eight palms are introduced. The palms are taught one at a time so that each can be explored as a unique martial art in and of itself.
